WHAT IS ALLTOP?
A while back I’d heard bits and pieces about Guy Kawasaki’s newest, latest and greatest project Alltop but didn’t make my way there until a couple of weeks ago. Since then I’ve been hooked. Alltop calls itself a “digital magazine rack” which I think is an apt description of what you get.

Their ABOUT page goes on to describe themselves as, “We help you explore your passions by collecting stories from “all the top” sites on the web. We’ve grouped these collections — “aggregations” — into individual Alltop sites based on topics such as environment, photography, science, Muslim, celebrity gossip, military, fashion, gaming, sports, politics, automobiles, and Macintosh. At each Alltop site, we display the headlines of the latest stories from dozens of sites and blogs.”Personally, I find it a great substitute for my igoogle page, it’s easier because it’s organized by topic area whereas my igoogle had dozens of blogs of all types scattered among each other. Every time I go back and navigate through the different sections I’m always amazed at the sections dedicated to a particular niche.
Today starts the first round of voting for the 2nd Annual Open Web Awards. Open Web Awards is the only multilingual international online voting competition that covers major innovations in web technology. Through an online nominating and voting process, the Open Web Awards recognizes and honors the top achievements in 26 categories. This year, they are partnering with over 100 blog partners and Catch Your Limit’s Bait, Tackle, Ice, Advice & Beer Blog is one of them.

The first Open Web Awards achieved over 250,000 votes combined between Mashable and their 50 international blog partners. Winners included Facebook, Digg, Google, Meetup, Twitter, Netvibes, woot!, Last.fm and Mahalo.

So now that your withdraw from the Presidential Election has really set in, you have the opportunity to get out and VOTE for something again!!

If you have ever wondered what viral marketing is, this is a pretty good example. Although the service it promotes is nothing to write home about, the video is right on target. It’s fun, timely and people love to see their names where they don’t expect it! In fact, because I used Tom’s name and not my own, I should receive some major brownie points in the office! (Hint: He loves tattoos) So even though I would not use or support the product this marketing effort promotes, I am still perpetuating the “Viralness” of the campaign. This is what Viral marketing is all about, finding something that people will use and forward to their friends who in turn create their own version and forward to another set of friends and so on. And in all that time the company is driving traffic to their site, gaining exposure.

Enjoy!

Time Warner Cable is changing the way some people pay for cable. On Thursday Time Warner will start to test a service that charges customers of high-speed Internet service based on their usage.

Subscribers in Beaumont, Texas, will be charged $1 per gigabyte above monthly allowances, a company spokesman told Reuters. Consumers in the test region will be offered several levels of service, and if they stay in it, they stay within the contract, no additional charges (similar to cell phone plans).

A $29.95 per month plan for 768 kilobits per second and a 5 gigabyte limit would let users send and receive about 349,525 e-mails, play 170 hours of online games, or download 1,383 digital songs per month. Or there is a $54.90 monthly fee for a 15-megabit-per-second service and a 40 gigabyte monthly limit would allow subscribers to watch 124 hours of standard-definition videos or download 11,070 songs.

The new policy is intended to address the top 5 percent of users, who have spent a “disproportionate” amount of time on Time Warner Cable’s network, a company spokesman said. These people are “taxing the infrastructure,” the spokesman continued. “In order to make investments in the infrastructure, we have to find the revenue to pay for it.”

Now, I understand that business models change. But, how do you roll this out? We constantly find ourselves looking for ways to make more money and squeeze more out of the customers we already have, but this will be interesting to see how many customers Time Warner loses because of the restrictions implemented.

We find similar problems throughout the Internet, and for me, especially in regards to online publishing. Many users feel that everything online should be free, especially if it started free. If you were required to pay $1 to read each news article written online, most people would leave before even seeing its content. But with skyrocketing paper, printing and mailing costs, magazine publishers are searching for additional ways to make money.

The one catch I foresee is that people will not pay for it.

Good luck Time Warner. (Oh, I should have mentioned this earlier. Look what happened to AOL. They used to hand out these discs with hours of Internet access on them.)

You will not find this term in any medical text book but psychiatrists have come to define it just the same. This severe condition that causes parents to become depressed, angry, and even physically ill strikes without notice. This debilitating illness is Empty-nest syndrome.

Empty-nest syndrome is brought on when kids move away from home and leave their father’s to deal with their nagging wives. Mothers have to come to grips with the fact that the only person to talk to is the man they vowed to spend the rest of their lives with. Sure, one could argue, “What about the dog?” as he scurries under the bed to avoid the constant bickering. Yes, it is the grim truth that the parents have to relearn how to converse and be civil with one another. They start out slow with a “Go to hell” here and a “You stupid SOB” there and progress to “I love you” and soft touches. Then it hits them! They realize what has caused all this tension in the first place, their inability to do it, it being sex, anywhere they please. Now the dog can’t get far enough under the bed. This time not to evade bickering but to try and save his ears from hearing what was going on in the living room.

Most psychologists say that Empty-nest syndrome will pass with time. I say that it will only pass with a substitute for the missing child. Kyle, we miss you but you are being replaced.

Love,

–Mom & Dad
