I’m not the smartest guy in the world. Heck, I’m not the smartest guy in Panera Bread Company where I sit now. So it should come as no surprise that I picked the absolute worst time to move to Chicago.
The drive up went, just okay. I was greeted with 3 hours of misty, swirly and cold rain on the way in to Chicago. You might like to know that my windshield wipers locked up a while back and at one point I had to employ an Ace Ventura (head out the window) technique on an exit ramp. After a fresh coat of Rain-X, I finished my drive in the soup without further incident.
Moving back in with Mom, no matter how short the time, is never cool. In a mad dash to pack my things I used a technique popularized by hobos… It’s called throw your clothes in a garbage bag and sling it over your shoulder. In my case “a bag” meant five and my shoulder is an old crappy Audi. The clothes in a bag technique, while economical on space, will quickly become a point of ridicule with your mom. If I have to hear “they’re all wrinkled” one more time, I may be homeless by tomorrow.
Chicago cannot handle rain. We had a Chicago record 7″ on Saturday, 11″ total for the weekend, and the city basically shut down. Meanwhile back in good old Tallahassee we call 7″ a Thursday afternoon. I saw a bus loaded with folks try to get through a giant puddle near the mall. The driver hesitated for a second, chose an angle and went for it… he didn’t make it and the bus was stuck like a giant Greyhound Island.
I’m getting settled here in my new surroundings. Finding new places to hang out and ways to get around. I miss Tallahassee and a little place called Catch Your Limit. While I am out of CYL headquarters, I’ll be blogging as much as ever on management, marketing, customer service and keep you updated on my trials in the city of big shoulders. Not to mention the bone-chilling cold that lurks around the corner.
See you all soon.
