Clearing the Fence

Last night I did what I haven’t done since little league. I hit a three run home run to help my team to victory. And when I say hit I mean I exploded on a belt high pitch clearing the fence by a good 20 feet.
Okay, so it was only slow pitch softball but it was still a home run. I weigh 175 pounds soaking wet and even the first baseman on the opposing team said I was the last guy he expected to hit a home run, so it felt pretty darn good. I remember the days when I played little league ball and when you hit a home run you were allowed to triumphantly jog around the bases. Last night, however, was a different story. As I learned you are only suppose to touch first and go back to the dugout. I did so but I felt a little empty about the experience. The scene from The Natural complete with exploding lights and inspirational music is what I expected.
I am walking a little taller today. Strutting around the office and pointing and laughing at other players on the team who did not homer. It’s fun but it isn’t going to last. We have a few monsters on the team who go deep with regularity. At the very least I will have until next week to let my head swell up a little bit… and then its back to power bunts and seeing eye singles.
