Today I returned from vacation. It was one of the best vacations I took in a long while. And while Pluto made news by chasing a young tourist around Disney World’s big brother in California, we saw no visceral displays of mascot violence.
If you are thinking of taking a trip I recommend the middle of September. Short lines. Less screaming family members. Great service.
The Magic Kingdom was great, but the theme park highlight of the trip for me was a water park by the name of Wet & Wild (W&W). As the name implies, it was both. Disney has pretty much soaked up the water park market (pun intended), but ask any local which is the best around and W&W will be at the top of nearly everyone’s list. If you are bringing a family make sure you check out W&W. They have more family tube rides than Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach combined. I highly recommend checking out the family ride Disco h2o. The long thick tube ride spits you into a giant rotating bowl complete with a disco ball and Saturday Night Fever blasting in the background. Maybe in twenty years the good people at W&W will change the name to Hip Hop Wet Flop but until then you will have to explain to your kids what boogie means.
I always marvel at the genius of Disney. For the most part every thing they put out turns to platinum. Their newest hits High School Musicals and Pirates of the Caribbean were on full display every where you turned. I saw an 85 year old lady who turned her wheel chair into the Black Pearl, talk about non-traditional.
The final stop on the tour was Universal’s Islands of Adventure and Studios. They were both great as well. They got rid of my Back to the Future ride in favor of a new Simpson’s ride coming next year and while I am looking forward to getting on the Homer Mobile I can’t help but miss the Delorian.
To summarize going on vacation is like anything else in life, it all hinges on the company you keep. I could not have asked for better people to go on the trip with. My formula for a great vacation is; Great Friends + Great Food + Great Drinks – Complaining= one helluva trip.
More on the genius of Disney marketing coming soon.
